#goodtimesathome, make music a daily ritual.

We’ve been digging in our archives for musical gems; special recordings coming live from the Desa over the last five years. To celebrate, some DJs have also sent us their answers to our Archive Series Q+A, talking all things Bali. Tune in for some weekly auditory magic.

Pinky Perzelle

First up is Pinky Perzelle’s mix from his beach club set back in June 2019. He graced the bar deck to serenade the sun as it slowly made its way through all the hues and once again behind the horizon line. Soak up the mix and tune in to his Q+A.

Q: Tell us 3 things you are obsessed with right now and tell us why.
A: 1) YouTube cooking channel vortexes! The lower the views and budget, the better the recipe. The wild editing, video effects and mistakes all add to the flavour and keep me on my toes. (Sorry Nigella).
2) 70’s movie soundtracks. No matter what musical creation phases I go through, those bodies of work always evoke a lot of emotion and continue to inspire me. Franco Micalizzi and Piero Piccioni are two rekindled favourites. There’s so many great catalogues to sort through. Also, Marvin Gaye played nearly every instrument on ‘T Plays It Cool’ and the Troubleman soundtrack was his first album with full creative control.
3) TV archive YouTube channels. From Dot Cotton best bits to old game shows and trippy commercials from around the world. ‘Giorgio Memoriatelevisiva’ is a treasure trove of Italian nostalgia.

Q: What is one thing you love and miss about Bali, and why?
A: Taking detours on a scooter and intentionally getting lost. It’s super liberating. One day you might stumble across a secluded waterfall, the next you might end up stuck in rush hour traffic with questionable tan lines and saddle sore. It’s the little things..

Q: Who has inspired you recently?
A: ‘The Brothers Nylon’ (Nick & Michael Rufolo). Two hugely talented brothers from Long Island. They play every instrument under the sun and track everything live, straight to tape. Their work-rate and musicianship is next level. From synth jams, dub mixes, string arrangements, comedy, funky psychedelia. Their skill set knows no boundaries and they video the whole process.

Q: What is a Potato Head?
A: A forward thinking, ever-evolving entity.

Mans Ericson

Next up from the Archives is Mans Ericson’s Sunset Sessions set from April 2018. He talks about everything he misses about Bali in his Q+A, including the people and scooter rides in the wind. Press play on his mix and take in his Q+A here.

Q: Tell us 3 things you are obsessed with right now and tell us why; film, documentary, music track, album, DJ mix, book, blog, playlist, recipe, drink ..whatever you want to share with the world.
A: I’m trying to be less obsessive at the moment and find a nice and slow rhythm in this weird time. My family and I are taking daily bicycle trips to Richmond Park outside of London to stay connected to nature. I’ve also started doing yoga and meditation. Always obsessed with finding good music though 🙂

Q: What is one thing you love and miss about Bali, and why?
A: The Indonesian people and the special vibe of Bali keep me coming back. I also miss riding a scooter with the wind in my hair 🙂

Q: Who has inspired you recently? This can be a creative, a sustainability advocate, activist, musician, artist, anyone.
A: Always my wife for being so wise.

Q: What is a Potato Head?
A: Someone looking for a good time.

Dicky Trisco

Transporting back to October 2018 with this Sunset Sessions set from Dicky Trisco, who is next in our Archive mix series, as we dig for musical gems and special recordings coming live from the Desa from over the last five years. He chats about his recent inspirations and staying sane in Scotland during lockdown. Press play on his mix and take in his Q+A .

Q: Tell us 3 things you are obsessed with right now and tell us why; film, documentary, music track, album, DJ mix, book, blog, playlist, recipe, drink ..whatever you want to share with the world.
A: I am currently obsessed with keeping busy, fit, sane and in touch and in love with those who are close to me. Lockdown is particularly challenging, but we have to remember it’s vital purpose (to keep people alive!). We can also use the break it gives us in our otherwise hectic and busy lives to be kind to ourselves and others, and start to recreate things for a world that is going to need to heal after this is all over. I have also been drinking too much…and I painted my garden wall. My plants are better watered than usual.

Q: What is one thing you love and miss about Bali, and why?
A: I miss the sunsets and the food. But really Bali is all about the wonderful Balinese people. They are so kind and special. The Island would be nothing without them and their amazing generosity. Terima kasih banyak x

Q: Who has inspired you recently? This can be a creative, a sustainability advocate, activist, musician, artist, anyone.
A: I have been inspired recently by a Mexican artist called Holalou who’s work with colour and shapes really hits the spot for me. My good friend Maihara from Brasil also takes wonderful pictures of indigenous peoples and communities in Brazil which I find truly stunning. And my amigo Cameron Saul has been making real positive strides forward with his sustainable work for his fashion brand Bottletop with projects that have a really global vision.

Musically I’ve been listening to a lot of music from North East Brazil which is unlike the Samba and boogie sounds classically associated with the country and sounds much more psychedelic and out there with almost a Turkish folk vibe about it. Check out the work of Tom Ze for example. Musically Brazil continues to inspire. Mehmet Aslan has also introduced me to some wonderful Turkish music I can’s stop listening to.

And my buddy from NYC JKriv inspires me everyday through DJing and working on music together. Our friendship and love is the root of some many creative things. And I feel joy when we play together.

I have also been wearing tartan trousers which has made me happy. I bought them in Spain. I like that too. Global connections make me very happy. It’s the world I want to live in where people mix, mingle and share together. Let’s hope it comes back soon.

Q: What is a Potato Head?
A: I think it can be whatever you want it to be, or mean nothing at all. That’s good in my book.

Q: Tell us 3 things you are obsessed with right now and tell us why; film, documentary, music track, album, DJ mix, book, blog, playlist, recipe, drink ..whatever you want to share with the world.
A: The ‘Black Godfather’ documentary, ‘Fauda’ on Netflix, our new releases on Blue Velvet/Resista records, Francois K’s ‘World of Echoes’ forum on Facebook, spring sunshine in London… love to the world!

Q: What is one thing you love and miss about Bali, and why?
A: The smiling faces, beautiful sunsets, old friends, massages, the ocean, holy/sacred waterfalls, coconuts, tropical paradise, deserted beaches.

Q: Who has inspired you recently?

One of today’s most revered online music magazines, Stamp The Wax keeps its mission simple. “We say nice things about music that stirs the emotions and has an interesting story to tell, whether you’re a headliner or it’s the first thing to your name,” says co-founder Aaron Levitt.

Launched in 2011 while at university, Stamp The Wax was Aaron and his friend Josh Brill’s attempt to create something productive out of the surplus of time they spent surrounded by music. Back then it was mainly dance club grooves that got him going, but as editor-in-chief of the internationally admired site, today his musical interests—or obsessions, as he calls them—are vast.

“The global network that Stamp The Wax has opened up for me up has been the best thing that’s come out of the whole project,” he tells us. “Supporting music from all over the world has helped me form relationships with similar minded people and learn about local cultures beyond the guidebooks. There’s a real comfort knowing there are people in far-off places who think and try similar things as you; travelling to those places and meeting those people is a hugely enriching experience, and one I’m forever thankful for.”

We’re fortunate Aaron’s musical adventures have brought him to Bali, and excited to have him at the Potato Head Beach Club bar deck for a Sunset Session. Be sure to catch him there or online via the video live-stream on our our Facebook channel. To get you in the tropical state of mind, we asked Aaron to select his top five sunset tracks.

“The other fun stuff that I learnt after second time travelling to East Africa: Bunch of love collection from Middle East, Persian, North and East Africa. This just a tip of Iceberg of amazing music out of never ending conversations with friends that cross the path in my tour and residency project. I think this playlist comes from the messy topic of Silk Trade Route, Spread of Islam, Fascination of Black Jazz mixing tons of territorial musical scales and that somehow vibing close and happened to 60-70s South East Asian Boogie like Pop Yeye or Thai Funk.”

Venue: The Music Room at Potato Head Hong Kong
Date: Thursday, 19 March 2020
Time: 9.00pm–1.00am

Club Kowloon is back to Potato Head on Thursday, March 19th to present an exhibition and the art installation “Vulgar Display of Power” of Norwegian artist Espen Cook as well as an audio visual experience at The Music Room.

Music by:
Max Davis
Yao
Sunsiare

This exhibition showcases a series of site specific works and installations by Hong Kong based artist Espen Cook. The works originates around the themes of underground music culture, clubbing, punk aesthetics and attitude, drawing inspirations of the artist own youth listening to heavy metal and alternative rock in the west coast of Norway.

This exhibition is celebrating underground music and culture, the suburban kid, the idea of graffiti and vandalism as means of rebellion. The approach is that of the amateur and not the professional artist, improvising and painting fast and with high energy. Honouring the days of the youth and connecting the dots between the kid growing up in a small town in Norway and the HK based artist and DJ he has become today.

The backdrop of this story is that of young man growing up loving skateboard graphics, his brothers Iron Maiden posters and merch and his graffiting, DJing, b-boying cousins in the south of Spain who exposed him to another kind of underground culture. This exhibition will take you on a journey of musical and visual influences and inspirations.
